The term "Lahu" refers to humans in their native tongue, and their predecessors were the Lolo people who inhabited the Tibetan Plateau. The Chinese had acknowledged the political self-governance of central and southern Yunnan inhabitants until the Thai Yai and Chinese subsequently took control of the region. The Lahu people of Thailand are classified as one of the six primary hill tribes.
