Otavalo People

The Otavalo people are an indigenous group that resides in the Imbabura Province of Ecuador, specifically in the town of Otavalo and its surrounding areas.

Potatoes are deeply ingrained in the culture and diet of the Otavalo people. They have cultivated various potato species, each with unique characteristics and flavours. The Otavalo farmers have developed a deep knowledge of potato cultivation techniques, including crop rotation, terracing, and natural pest control methods.

The Otavalo people have a rich history that dates back to pre-Columbian times. They are descendants of the ancient Caranqui civilisation and have preserved many aspects of their indigenous heritage despite centuries of Spanish colonial influence. Today, they are recognised for their craftsmanship, particularly in textiles, weaving, and handicrafts.

The Otavalo countryside, nestled in the highlands of Ecuador, offers breathtaking landscapes and a glimpse into rural life: rolling hills, vibrant green fields, and picturesque farmlands.

The Otavalo people have successfully balanced preserving their indigenous traditions with engaging in modern society. Many have embraced education and global opportunities while still maintaining a strong connection to their ancestral roots. Their resilience, cultural pride, and artistic talents have made them an integral part of Ecuador's diverse cultural fabric.
